About high & low spreads

News events frequently cause uncertainty and volatility in the market. The release of economic data can affect market sentiment as they may come lower or higher than the market consensus. To reduce some of the risk of unexpected volatility, liquidity providers frequently widen spreads.

High Spread

A high spread is indicated by a significant variance between the ask and bid prices. The spreads on major currency pairs are usually low, while the spreads on emerging market currency pairs are usually higher. Spreads that are higher than usual are the result of decreased liquidity or increased volatility. Spreads can significantly widen ahead of important news releases or during crucial political events, like the US elections.

Low Spread

A low spread means there is little difference between the ask and bid prices. Low spreads are preferred by traders, especially during busy forex sessions. Low spreads are a sign of increased liquidity and decreased volatility.

All trading involves risk. It is possible to lose all your capital.
